In view of existing gaps in knowledge about the corona virus and the disease Covid-19, the medical statistician Gerd Antes calls for a coordinated research action.
The professor at the University of Freiburg said on Deutschlandfunk that there is an incredible amount of research on the corona virus, but it is completely uncoordinated. There is no master plan to close gaps in knowledge such as the number of unreported cases, causes of death or infectivity. Antes believes that research could be coordinated by large research institutions, the Ministry of Research or the Federal Chancellery. Competition in science is completely useless when it comes to corona virus, he emphasized.
Antes also called for systematic tests for corona infections and for antibodies. Currently, arbitrary and sometimes chaotic testing is being carried out. For this reason, no findings can be drawn from the test results. Antes sees progress in the antibody tests - these have now become more reliable. Systematic tests and more precise knowledge could mean that if the number of infections increased, only small units - and not complete schools - would have to be closed again, said Antes.
