An international research team has developed an underwater WiFi system.
A diver can use it to transfer data from a smartphone. They are beamed from a portable amplifier on the equipment to a computer on the surface of the water. This works with lasers or LEDs. The computer is connected to the Internet via satellite.
The underwater network enables divers to communicate with each other without any hand signals, the researchers say. You could also transfer photo and video material in real time. But there are still some obstacles. For example, the amplifier and the receiver computer must always be at a certain angle to each other so that the light signal can be transmitted. This is not easy with waves.
